CMS is the the government agency that decides what gets paid for and what doesn’t by Medicare and Medicaid. Often private insurers follow the lead of CMS, so what they decide is huge. I am glad they are planning to cover CAR-T but it looks as if it will be restricted to major centers for at least the first few years. How willing hospitals are to do CAR-T will depend on the rate of reimbursement and how burdensome are the reporting requirements. I am very happy about this decision and proud of the small role I and other patients played in the approval by going to CMS headquarters and lobbying on behalf of future CAR-T patients. Here’s link to more details and very early reactions.
