Ask the Lab Scientist – Sterilizing a Face Mask for Reuse

In science and medicine, information is constantly changing and may become out-of-date as new data emerge. All articles and interviews are informational only, should never be considered medical advice, and should never be acted on without review with your health care team.

Question:

After removing the staples and rubber bands and metal can one put my N19 mask in the microwave to sterilize it or other items? And if so, for how long?

Answer:

Here is the answer from Dr. Susan LeClair.

Sorry. It cannot be done. The destruction caused by heat (in an oven) or energy (in a microwave) utterly destroys the functionality of the materials. You should think of all masks as one time use.
