The impacts of the Palisades, Eaton, and other wildfires in the Los Angeles, CA area are devastating. At this time, recovery efforts are ongoing and constantly evolving.
For members of the chronic lymphocytic leukemia / small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL / SLL) community that reside in impacted areas, CLL Society is reminding them that, due to immune dysfunction and, for many, the use of medications, special precautions are necessary. These precautions are not intended to replace or override guidance from local authorities but rather to address the specific vulnerabilities of those with CLL / SLL. They include:
- Air Quality: Air quality in affected areas may remain unhealthy for some time. Consider wearing an N95 mask, even indoors, and using HEPA filters in your home if you have them available.
- Water Safety: Water safety is uncertain in some regions. If advised or if you are in doubt, avoid drinking tap water. Boiling water will not remove toxins or particulate matter. When possible, use bottled water for drinking and cooking.
- Debris Removal: Do not attempt to remove debris. In addition to the physical risks posed by heavy or sharp objects, some debris may contain toxic substances. If you must handle debris, wear a mask, goggles, and gloves, and wash yourself and your clothing thoroughly afterward.
- Emergency Preparedness: Ensure you have an adequate supply of your medications and keep critical medical information, including your healthcare provider’s contact details, in a readily accessible “emergency bag” for evacuation or other emergencies.
- Contact Your Healthcare Provider: If you experience any unusual symptoms, reach out to your healthcare provider right away.
