CLL Society Informs CMS of Patient Confusion Around the IRA

In science and medicine, information is constantly changing and may become out-of-date as new data emerge. All articles and interviews are informational only, should never be considered medical advice, and should never be acted on without review with your health care team.

CLL Society recognizes a stronger patient understanding of the implementation of the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan (MPPP) program is needed. This program, also known as “smoothing,” is part of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Since patients will have to proactively enroll in the program, documents informing them about the program, forms to enroll, and communications about qualifying, disenrolling, etc. all must be written in patient-friendly terms. Along with our fellow Protecting Innovation in Rare Cancers (PIRC) Coalition members, we’re advocating to the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) that these patient needs be addressed before the program goes into effect in 2025.

When CMS rolled out six “model documents” for feedback, we asked members of our patient community for input and used those comments to submit a response to CMS this week. The letter we sent to CMS is below.
