Dr. Susan O’Brien Wins the Binet-Rai Medal for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) Research

In science and medicine, information is constantly changing and may become out-of-date as new data emerge. All articles and interviews are informational only, should never be considered medical advice, and should never be acted on without review with your health care team.

CLL Society is proud to share the news that one of our directors from our board, Dr. Susan O’Brien, the Medical Director of the Sue & Ralph Stern Center for Clinical Trials & Research and a Professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at UCI, was one of two recipients of the prestigious Binet-Rai Medal for excellence in CLL research at the iwCLL (International Workshop on Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia) 2023 meeting in Boston.

The award is named after the first two winners from the first iwCLL meeting 20 years ago, Drs. Rai and Binet, who developed the CLL staging that is still being used today to help guide therapy.

The moment was even more impactful as Dr. Kanti Rai himself gave the award.

Dr. O’Brien was recognized for the over one hundred trials where she was the principal investigator and the over 900 publications that have changed for the better how CLL / SLL is managed.

CLL Society feels immensely proud to have her as part of our leadership.

Dr. Cathy Wu from Dana Farber was the other well-deserving winner.
